Is Ice Cream Cake indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Ice Cream Cake is an indica-dominant hybrid: Leafly lists it as Wedding Cake × Gelato #33, and Leafly News, High Times and SeedFinder credit the cross to Seed Junky Genetics.1,2,3,4 The name is not unique: Mad Scientist Genetics sells a different Ice Cream Cake, and Leafly lists Gelato Cake with the same two parents as a separate strain.5,6,7

The two parents

Wedding Cake, also known as Triangle Mints #23 and, in Canada, as Pink Cookies, is Seed Junky’s cross of Triangle Kush and Animal Mints.8,14 Under the Triangle Mints #23 name it won Best Hybrid at the 2018 SoCal Medical Cannabis Cup, and it was Leafly’s Strain of the Year for 2019.15,16 It has its own guide in the Official Cannabis network at weddingcakestrain.com.

Gelato #33 is one of the numbered cuts of Gelato, the Sunset Sherbet × Thin Mint GSC cross that GreenState traces to Mario Guzman’s Sherbinskis. After a 2014 pheno-hunt, selections 25, 33, 41, 43, 45 and 49 went into production; Mr. Sherbinski gave #33 away, and it went into wide production in 2015.9,15,17 Leafly also calls it Gelato Kush and describes it as a balanced hybrid with an uplifting, energetic high; Leafly’s 2023 best-seller list gives the nickname Larry Bird.9,18 Gelato has its own guide in the Official Cannabis network at gelatostrain.com.

One name, two crosses

High Times noted in 2019 that multiple strains go by the name, and Weedmaps describes two. Seed Junky’s is the one on most menus; Weedmaps calls it “the version that blew up across modern dispensary menus”.3,5

Everything else on this site describes Seed Junky’s Ice Cream Cake unless it says otherwise; our lab data cannot tell the two crosses apart, since both are sold under the same name.

How indica is it?

Every source puts Ice Cream Cake on the indica side; the labels differ. Leafly’s strain page calls it an indica-dominant hybrid with mostly calming effects, Leafly’s list of best strains for feeling relaxed files it as an indica, and Weedmaps lists it as an indica.1,5,19 AllBud gives 75% indica and 25% sativa, as do Zamnesia for its seed version and SeedFinder for Mad Scientist’s version; Barney’s Farm’s seed version is 70% indica, and SeedFinder calls Seed Junky’s “mostly indica”.4,6,20,21,22 The parents lean less than the child: Leafly rates Wedding Cake mostly calming and Gelato #33 more energizing than calming.8,9

Cuts, phenotypes and seed versions

Seed Junky never sold its Ice Cream Cake as feminized seeds, and SeedFinder says it currently sells neither seeds nor clones of it.4 Some growers’ selections carry their own names: Leafly’s Larry Cake page describes a Gelato #33 × Wedding Cake selection pheno-hunted by Freddy’s Fuego in Washington from Seed Junky seeds, “also known as Ice Cream Cake”.23

Seeds sold as Ice Cream Cake are other breeders’ versions. SeedFinder lists nine, among them Barney’s Farm’s feminized Gelato #33 × Wedding Cake, Zamnesia’s Wedding Cake × Gelato #33 with an autoflower that adds ruderalis genetics, and Mad Scientist Genetics’ regular seeds.6,21,22,24,25

Numbered names

Theory Wellness sells an Ice Cream Cake #2, which it describes as Seed Junky’s Gelato 33 × Wedding Cake.26 Products labelled with a number, 146 of the 2,489 tests, sit inside our count, because our matching reads a number such as "#5" as a lot or batch code: 102 carry "#5", all from Michigan, and 21 "#2". The labels do not say whether a number marks a phenotype.27

What our lab data adds

Our strict matching excluded 335 results across all product types (249 of them flower) sold under near-miss names, including crosses such as "Ice Cream Cake x Lemon Tree Buds" (9) and "Ice Cream Cake x Kush Mints" (7). The largest single group, 34 results, was sold as Nitro Cake and labelled as a cross of Ice Cream Cake with GMO × Trophy Wife.27
